<p>Kaufman House has been sold for $ 15 million on May 15 2008 (please note: to add is still the buyer&#8217;s premium, fees, &#8230; so total would be something between <a href="http://www.juliusshulmanfilm.com/blog/" target="_blank">$ 16 million</a> and <a href="http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/05/sold_19_million.php" target="_blank">$ 19 million</a>, according to different sources, cf. links) &#8211; <strong>and not:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;The contract has been terminated by the Seller by reason of a breach of its terms by the buyer,&#8221; as Christie&#8217;s officially stating. Why? No comment. So now &#8211; what? &#8220;Nothing has been decided.&#8221; Well then &#8211; to market again, I guess?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Ein ähnliches Schicksal hat zunächst auch dem Kaufmann House gedroht. In den 1990ern stand es als potenzielles Abrissprojekt über drei Jahre zum Verkauf, ehe es von zwei Privatleuten, Beth Edwards Harris und Brent Harris zum Grundstückspreis von 1,5Mio Dollar erworben wurde. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Was dann folgt, liest sich ein bisschen wie eine romantische Traumgeschichte: Sie, eine Architekturhistorikerin, und er, Investment Manager, entdecken das leerstehende Gebäude im Urlaub, kaufen es spontan, renovieren dann sechs Jahre lang und unternehmen alles, um es in den Originalzustand zurückzuversetzen (in den Jahren wurde das Haus zeitgemäß ergänzt und in seiner ursprünglichen Konzeption bedeutend verändert).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Aber wie das Leben so spielt: jetzt lassen sich die Harris’ scheiden und das Haus soll verkauft werden. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Ist das gut oder nicht? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Kritische Stimmen geben zu denken, dass es wohl besser wäre, wenn diese Häuser nicht an den Meistbietenden veräußert würden, sondern von einer öffentlichen Institution betreut würden, so dass die Häuser öffentlich zugänglich wären. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Das war etwa bei <a href="http://www.farnsworthhouse.org/" target="_blank">Farnsworth House</a> der Fall: es wurde vom National Trust for Historic Preservation erworben und ist jetzt der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">Dr. Beth Edwards Harris dagegen hält die Versteigerung für förderlich:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;">“It’s an odd thing, but the more money this house goes for, the better it is for preservation in my point of view.[…] I think it will encourage other people who have the income to go out and get places like these to restore, rather than just looking for some pretty palace somewhere.&#8221; (zitiert nach NY Times Artikel)</span></p>
