Otto D. HANDSCHUH in Stuttgart
The artist Otto D. Handschuh (b. 1978 in Bad Schlema) ostensibly works with classic materials, such as stone, wood, and metal. He adds these materials, assemblage-like, onto found objects and puts them through a process of transformation, using equally classic sculptural methods.
He takes a sandstone capital, for instance, which originally decorated the facade of a house, and alters it until it reaches its static limits. Or he dismantles the furnishings of an office and reassembles the individual pieces into poetic structures. The resulting installation bears the title »Die innere Konstruktion von Büroräumen« (The Inner Construction of Office Spaces) – title that suggests the good deal of humor that resonates in Handschuh’s approach.

Info _ Vordergründig arbeitet der Künstler Otto D. Handschuh (geb. 1978 in Bad Schlema) mit klassischen Materialien wie Stein, Holz und Metall. Diese setzt er versatzstückartig an vorgefundene Objekte an und unterzieht sie mit mit ebenfalls klassisch bildhauerischen Strategien einem Transformationsprozess. So höhlt er beispielsweise ein Sandsteinkapitell, das ursprünglich eine Häuserfassade zierte, bis an die Grenze des statisch Möglichen aus. Oder er zerlegt eine Büroeinrichtung und setzt die Einzelteile zu poetischen Gebilden zusammen. Die daraus hervor gegangene Installation trägt den Titel »Die innere Konstruktion von Büroräumen« – der Titel verrät, dass in Handschuhs Ansatz auch viel Humor mitschwingt.
Otto D. Handschuh studierte an den Akademien der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart und Karlsruhe, wo er Meisterschüler von Prof. Harald Klingelhöller war. 2012 erhielt er das Karlsruher Kulturstipendium.
